Quotes from General Lee and General Grant

In celebration of the anniversary of Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox earlier this month, I thought we’d take a look at some famous quotes from both generals. You could certainly spend all day reading the various quotes from each man. There was so much that I wanted to share. Words on army life, each other, honor, life, God, country, etc. But I chose to keep it short and sweet. Enjoy!

244Robert E. Lee:

“I have been up to see the Congress and they do not seem to be able to do anything except to eat peanuts and chew tobacco, while my army is starving.”

“It is good that war is so horrible, or we might grow to like it.”

“I cannot trust a man to control others who cannot control himself.”

“The truth is this: The march of Providence is so slow, and our desires so impatient; the work of progress is so immense and our means of aiding it so feeble; the life of humanity is so long, that of the individual so brief, that we often see only the ebb of the advancing wave and are thus discouraged. It is history that teaches us to hope.”

“Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one.”

“I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.”

*I picked up these mugs in Virginia three years ago. I love the quotes and the graphics. The front side shows a picture of the general. But what I love most are the signatures. The one on the left is Grant and the right belongs to Lee.

Ulysses S. Grant:

“The friend in my adversity I shall always cherish most. I can better trust those who helped to relieve the gloom of my dark hours than those who are so ready to enjoy with me the sunshine of my prosperity.”

“My failures have been errors in judgment, not of intent.”

“I have never advocated war except as a means of peace.”

“Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions.”

“I know only two tunes: one of them is ‘Yankee Doodle’, and the other isn’t.”

“I don’t know why black skin may not cover a true heart as well as a white one.”

I hope you enjoyed this small sampling of both men. Let me know which quote was your favorite or any that surprised or inspired you.

  1. Thanks for sharing a fantastic selection of quotes- I don’t know if I could pick a favorite. I DO like the ones on your mugs, and agree that the signatures are a great touch! (I may have to hunt one down for the hubby- he’s a bit American Civil War guy 🙂 )

    1. Thank you!!
The mugs are such a joy! I hope you can find some. They had a Lincoln one too.
At one point, I had the store number. I’m pretty sure that info has been tossed out by now. But if I can dig around and come up with anything, I’ll gladly share it with you. 🙂

  2. Lol I understand that!!
Guess what!! I think I found it! I remember the general area we were in. And I remember eating across the street at McDonald’s. We weren’t far from the Appomattox park, and I needed new batteries. So we after breakfast, we hopped across the street to this Walgreen’s type of store where I picked up batteries and found the mugs.
Lol I did a little searching on yellowbook.com, but I think I found the store!! I messaged them about the mugs. I’ll let you know if they get back to me. But here’s the store’s FB page. https://www.facebook.com/AppomattoxDrugStore24522/
LOL Honestly, I think I’m just thrilled that I tracked it down. 😉 Or think I tracked it down. Lol And don’t feel obligated to order because of any trouble I went through. LOL I just like solving the puzzle. And . . . so you don’t think I’m completely off my rocker: One of the reasons this store stood out, besides having the sweetest old lady behind the counter, was that I had bought 2 sets of mugs. One for me, and one for a giveaway. I mailed the set to the winner, but one of the mugs broke. I just happened to have had my receipt and was able to order a replacement mug for the winner. So it bugged me to know that I had contact information but couldn’t share it a second time.
